Table Tennis Club
When the new Parish Hall was built in 2005 a table-tennis table was purchased as part of the sports equipment. The Yeo Room was adequately sized to accommodate the table, and the table was used by the Youth Club between 2005 and 2008. After the Youth Club folded up for lack of members in 2008, the table stood idle in the store room.
Robin Macdonald therefore inserted the following item in the Village Voice News Round-up in October 2008.
TABLE TENNIS
With the demise of the Youth Club, there is a first class Table Tennis table standing idle in the Parish Hall store-room. There is therefore an opportunity now for older Thurlestone to come to the fore, especially since Boris Johnson has properly reclaimed Ping-Pong for the English at the Beijing Games.
A pensioners preliminary Ping-Pong knock-up will therefore be held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday 8th October at 5pm, to which all old-timeers are welcome - especially any with Johnny Leach or Victor Barna bats - to come along and turn back the clock. There must be quite a few pensioners out there who can still Ping a bit. Who knows? There may be enough to warrant a regular Hall booking. Both ladies and gentlemen are invited.
Sure enough, up rolled some eight old-timers who had a jolly good session for an hour and so it was decided to continue on a regular basis on Wednesday afternoons. The Table Tennis section has been a consistent and regular Hall booking ever since. As the attendance levels of both ladies and gentlemen grew, rising from an original regular quartet to a total of fourteen, the options of a second weekly session, or a second table were considered. On balance, a move into the main hall with the acquisition of a second table was preferred, and the Parish Hall committee was approached to fund the purchase of a new, second table at a cost of £400.
This expenditure was approved and the new table arrived in January 2013, since when the main hall has become the regular venue.
The club operates on a casual pay-as-you-play basis, with no annual subscription, and has always managed to pay its way, although attendance varies from week to week.
